The term cancer refers to the abnormal growth of cells. There are more than 200 different forms of cancer. Cancer is characterized by uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells. The spread of cells can destroy surrounding cells and destruction of surrounding tissue is associated with malignant cancer. Radiation and chemotherapy along with surgery are used to treat cancer.

Exercise for the cancer survivor has both psychological and physical benefits. Chemotherapy and radiation treatments break down bone and muscle tissue. Exercise counters these effects. Exercise will help restore functional strength and improve capacity to perform activities of daily living (ADL’s).
